I can still remember that hot summer day. I was fumbling around in the boat for a bobber. I loved these things. They were probably my favorite aspect of fishing. After all, how else was I supposed to know if a fish was gnawing on the line or not? I was only seven years old. The bobber made it simple. If it plunged below the water's surface, I knew a fish was nibbling. So anyway, I got my bobber situated and threaded a nice fat night-crawler on that sharp hook. Just the way my father had taught me. It was kind of gross watching its guts ooze out. Regardless, I whipped that fishing rod as hard as I could. You know, to get the line way out there, away from the boat. I didn't want the noise we were making to scare away the fish. Sadly the entire rod went airborne. That's always a bummer.
